Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is a careful cleaning of the crown and root surfaces to remove plaque and calculus, (also known as tartar). Scaling will help to remove the bacterial toxins from the gumline and root planing helps to smooth the root surface to promote healthy gum attachment to the tooth.
Remove toxins affecting your gum health.
Reduce the progression of periodontal disease.
A re-evaluation appointment is typically scheduled 4-6 weeks after scaling and root planing is completed. This period allows for resolution of periodontal inflammation. Another important part of the reevaluation appointment is to make a treatment plan regarding future management of the patient’s periodontal condition.
The Benefits
- Reduces the progression of periodontal disease by reducing bacteria and inflammation
- A more hygienic environment which helps to improve overall oral health
- Improves the esthetics and function of the gum tissue

Welcome To Acharya Periodontics
What is a Periodontist?
A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum disease, and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists receive extensive training in these areas, including three additional years of education beyond dental school. They are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease, and are also trained in performing cosmetic periodontal procedures.
Dr. Acharya, board certified in Periodontics and dental implant surgery, can treat more problematic periodontal cases, such as those with severe gum disease or a complex medical history. She can offer non-surgical and surgical treatment options specifically suited to patient needs and preferences.
Diagnosis and Management
A thorough examination and accurate, specific diagnosis is the foundation of effective treatment.
Non-Surgical Treatment
Very often, early stages of periodontal disease are effectively treated with non-surgical periodontal therapy.
Surgical Treatment
When necessary, Dr. Acharya and her team can walk you through a surgical treatment plan to restore healthy gums and teeth.
Dental Implants
Dental implants are a common procedure of permanently replacing missing teeth without affecting other neighboring teeth.
